BlackBerry 9670 Clamshell to Be Called BlackBerry "Style," Sport Two Keypad Flavors?

Reports suggest the awkward, yet anticipated BlackBerry 9670 clamshell will be branded the BlackBerry "Style."

In what should could be interpreted by many gadget-geeks as a sad joke, RIM's oft-pictured but still unannounced BlackBerry 9670 clamshell smartphone, which isn't exactly a stunning-looking device by any means, will be released under the name BlackBerry "Style," according to CrackBerry.com.

The BlackBerry Style 9670 clamshell/flip smartphone could also come with two different keyboard "flavors:" a BlackBerry Bold-style keyboard with silver "frets" between rows of keys; and a Curve-style keyboard with "chicklet" keys that have more space between them. Early "live" images of the BlackBerry Style 9670 show the Bold-like keyboard, but a recent image of the handheld taken from a device-simulator BlackBerry developer tool shows the BlackBerry 9670 with a Curve-style keypad.

I haven't seen any "real" images of the BlackBerry Style with a Curve keypad, so the rendering from the device simulator could be inaccurate, a mere mockup or a picture of another 96xx device altogether. Since the BlackBerry Style has not yet been announced, it's unclear whether or not it will become available in multiple versions. But it wouldn't be the first time RIM has released a new device with two different types of keyboards; the new Pearl 9100/9105 devices are practically identical, except for the 9100's "SureType" keyboard and the 9105's "T9" keypad.

And then there's this other mysterious Bold-style keypad that popped up online a few months ago, which may also be for some variant of the BlackBerry Style or another unknown device. (Note the placement of the "End/Send" and "Menu/Escape" keys don't match the placement of the same keys on the BlackBerry Style.)

Here are the purported notable specs for the BlackBerry 9670 Style: CDMA 3G bands; BlackBerry OS 6; 360X480 internal display; large external screen; Wi-Fi; 5MP camera; 1150 mAh battery; and RIM's trackpad for navigation.

Again, nothing about the BlackBerry Style is official at this point, but you can expect an announcement from RIM and/or various CDMA carriers, including both Sprint and Verizon in the United States, in the coming weeks.
